Cosmetic defects

The formation of an image in camera is based primarily on a fundamental characteristic optical surfaces: their bi-directional reflectance. This feature expresses the way What surfaces re-emit the light they receive. Because of the reflectance, an optical system will, in fact, be very different depending on whether it is destined to a surface of matt, glossy or transparent, uniform in color or not, etc..

The mathematical function for quantifying the behavior of a surface directly illuminated by a light source is called BRDF (in English: Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution Function).

Exploitation of this BRDF provides highly relevant information that are characteristic of the appearance of the surface and its potential defects.

The reflectance data of a surface can describe the appearance of a surface or its defects.
